🌕 THE BEAVER MOON IS COMING! 🌕

Yes, you read that right, the Beaver Moon. And no, it’s not named after a '90s boy band or a certain Canadian pop star. The Beaver Moon is the name given to the full moon in November was given by the Old Farmer's Almanac, and it’s named for the time when beavers in the Northern Hemisphere are furiously building their lodges and dams before winter sets in.

Here in Australia, of course, our beavers are more mythical than real, but we can still appreciate their hard yakka and take a leaf out of their book. It’s a good time to tidy up, get organised, and prep for summer rather than snow!

The Beaver Moon will reach its full glory at 9:19 pm tonight, but it’ll look spectacular on Thursday nights. For Perth sky-watchers, it’ll rise at 6:39 pm tonight (Wednesday), a big, bright, golden supermoon hugging the eastern horizon.

This isn’t just any full moon. It’s a supermoon, which means it’s slightly closer to Earth than usual, about 356,980 km away, so it appears larger and brighter. You might even catch yourself saying "wow" out loud (and that’s perfectly normal).

Depending on the weather, you can see it from you're house, but if you want to go somewhere special for it, you could go to King's Park, Matilda Bay, Wireless Hill, Golden View Lookout at Mundaring Weir, and Reabold Hill Summit Lookout.

In old folklore, the Beaver Moon symbolised preparation, stability, and hard work, so if you’ve been procrastinating on cleaning the shed, fixing that retic, or booking your summer stargazing tour, the universe is giving you a gentle nudge.

A major new cultural landmark is on the horizon for the Perth Hills!

We’re thrilled to announce the Perth Sky Sculpture Park (@perthskysculpture). This community-driven initiative will transform the Perth Observatory in Bickley Valley into a world-class destination for contemporary sculpture and nature-based tourism.

Set to officially open in Spring 2026, the Perth Sky Sculpture Park will showcase fine art sculptures and installations throughout the Observatory’s heritage buildings, domes, and bushland trails, creating a unique dialogue between art, nature, and astronomy.

The project will launch with a Biennial Awards Exhibition, establishing Perth Sky as a national platform for creativity and cultural tourism. The works will remain on display for two years, forming an evolving outdoor gallery beneath Western Australia’s spectacular skies.

Developed by a passionate team of artists, arts leaders, and tourism professionals within the Perth Observatory Volunteer Group, and supported by the City of Kalamunda, this initiative celebrates our region’s creativity, heritage, and community spirit.

A preview exhibition is now open at the Observatory, featuring stunning works by Sam Hopkins, Johannes Pannekoek, Denise Pepper, Steve Tepper, and international artist Anton Forde.

Check out this captivating image from the @nasahubble Space Telescope showing the ghostly “face” of Arp-Madore 2026-424 floating in deep space. This is the aftermath of a collision between two galaxies more than 700 million light-years away.

The “eyes” are the cores of the two colliding galaxies, while clouds of gas and dust form the “nose” and “head” pulled into active star-forming regions.
