Congrats to country police officer Marcus and Curtin University's Desert Fireball Network (DFN) on finding it. Ellie and Hadrien from the DFN are continuing the search for more pieces in the two other possible landing sites in the next couple of days.

🚀 Australian Space History in the Making! 🌏 🚀 Australian Space History in the Making! 🌏

This Thursday morning, Gilmour Space Technologies is set to launch Eris Test Flight 1 from North Queensland – marking the first time an Australian-made rocket aims for orbit from Australian soil!

Eris is a three-stage rocket, powered by a hybrid rocket engine, standing as tall as a 7-storey building and weighing 34 tonnes at lift-off (that’s about 17 average-sized cars!).

Don’t miss this milestone! Follow @gilmourspace Technologies for updates, and learn more about the mission here: http://spklr.io/6183C50N

The crack squad of meteor hunters at @curtinuniver The crack squad of meteor hunters at @curtinuniversity’s Desert Fireball Network has been crunching the numbers regarding the Mother's Day Fireball. From the footage they captured with their cameras, they believe that there should be a strewn field of meteorite fragments on the ground owing to the shallow entry slope of the fireball near the Breakaways, close to Hyden. They haven't attempted to search for them yet.

This fireball has also been observed by many members of the public, from the WA coast, including Perth, all the way out to Kalgoorlie.

How about that meteor this morning! From the dash How about that meteor this morning!

From the dashcam footage I’ve seen (Thanks @perthweatherlive), it looks like it may have entered the atmosphere over the Central Wheatbelt. To shine that brightly, the fireball—technically known as a bolide—would have been about the size of a cricket ball to a basketball. It’s most likely an iron meteor that’s been orbiting within the inner Solar System.

The Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower peaks on the mornin The Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower peaks on the morning of Monday the 5th of May!!!

The cosmic crumbs left behind by Halley’s Comet tail, they happen each year around this time of year as Earth passes through this leftover trail. The tiny dust and ice particles collide with our atmosphere at 66 kilometres per second—burning up in brilliant streaks of light.

The meteor shower is named after the star Eta Aquarii, part of the constellation Aquarius, which marks the region of the sky where the meteors appear to radiate from.

While Halley's Comet won’t return until 2061, its dusty trail continues to create not one, but two annual meteor showers—the Eta Aquarids in May, and the Orionids in October, with the Eta Aquarids being first documented by Western astronomers in the 19th century.

In 2025, the Eta Aquarids are expected to peak before dawn on Monday, 5 May, but you can see meteors from late April through to about 10 May. The best time to look is from 2:30 am to sunrise, while Aquarius is in the eastern sky. The Moon is a First Quarter Moon so it will have set by then, so we won’t have to worry about light pollution from it.

During peak, observers in dark-sky areas can expect to see up to 40 meteors per hour, with long, fast trails—some even leaving glowing trains that linger for a few seconds. In the City we may only see a few per hour due to the light pollution.

Tips to see:

•	Find a dark location.
•	Give your eyes 15 minutes to adjust to the dark.
•	Lie back or use a reclining chair to see as much sky as possible.
•	You just need your eyes and a bit of patience.
•	Dress warmly

Best Places to Watch in Perth:

•	CY O’Connor Lookout and Golden View Lookout at Mundaring Weir
•	Lake Clifton, Herron Point, and Island Point Reserve
•	Lake Leschenaultia
•	Bold Park (near Reabold Hill)
