You’ll see it called the Pink Moon in the media. The Moon won’t actually turn pink, unfortunately.

The Moon will reach its Full Moon phase at 10:11 am on Thursday, April 2nd, and it'll rise above the eastern horizon at 6:06 pm AWST.

The name comes from North American Indigenous traditions, referring to the blooming of wildflowers like phlox, which paint the landscape pink during early spring in the Northern Hemisphere. These Moon names were widely popularised in the 1930s when the Old Farmer’s Almanac in the US published traditional names used by Algonquin peoples of north-eastern North America, which were later adopted by colonial Americans.

• Sprouting Grass Moon 🌱
• Egg Moon 🥚
• Fish Moon 🐟
• Paschal Moon ✝️ (used to determine the date of Easter)

So, if the skies are clear, head outside with the kids and watch the Moon rise big, bright, and glowing… even if it’s not quite pink 😉

Today, the Autumnal Equinox occurs at 10:46 pm (AWST), marking the beginning of astronomical Spring for the Northern Hemisphere and the start of Astronomical Autumn for the Southern Hemisphere. This is an exact moment when the Sun’s declination equals 0 as seen from the Earth. The two points where the ecliptic, or the imaginary path the Sun seem to trace out along the celestial sphere meets the celestial equator are known as the equinoctial points.

The Equinox (literally meaning ‘equal nights’ in Latin) means that night and day are nearly equal worldwide, and that the Sun rises due east of an observer on the equinox and sets due west. The term Equilux is sometimes used to discern the difference between the true Equinox and the point when sunlight length equals the length of the night. Several factors play a role in this, including the time it takes for the physical diameter of the Sun to clear the horizon, atmospheric refraction, and the observer’s true position in their respective time zone. The Equilux occurs within a few days of either Equinox.

After 15 years of constructing a framework and strategy for the protection, preservation and promotion of the significant heritage of the Perth Observatory's collection and files, Paul Jones (AKA Our Indiana Jones) has decided to call it quits or as the photograph shows, “time for a change”.

After approval by the POVG Board, Paul handed over to Craig Bowers, who admits that they are big shoes to follow in.

Craig stated he will continue the solid work Paul started and has continued for 15 years to ensure the Observatory’s collection is protected, preserved and available for future generations.
