🌕✨ Pink Micro Moon Rising! ✨🌕 You may h 🌕✨ Pink Micro Moon Rising! ✨🌕

You may have seen in the media the Pink Moon occurs on Sunday, April 13 at 8:22am WAST. But don't worry we won't miss out, as you can catch this beautiful full Moon rising over Perth from 5:55 pm that evening!

Despite its name, the Pink Moon won’t appear pink. The name comes from the early spring bloom of wild ground phlox, a pink flower in North America 🌸. The names that are used for the each month's full Moons, were given by The Old Farmer’s Almanac, and they come from Native American, Colonial American, or other traditional North American sources passed down through generations. The April full Moon is also known as the Sprouting Grass Moon, Egg Moon, and Fish Moon in various cultural traditions. This year's Pink Moon is also the Paschal Full Moon, the first full Moon after the March equinox, which is used to determine the date of Easter.

This is a Micromoon, occurring just before the Moon reaches apogee—its farthest point from Earth. That means the Moon will look slightly smaller and dimmer than usual—about 14% smaller and 30% dimmer than a supermoon. Still beautiful though!

🗓 Moon at Apogee: April 14, 6:49am AWDT
📸 Pro tip: Photograph it at moonrise with a telephoto lens + tripod for the best shots. The “Moon illusion” near the horizon makes it look larger!

🌊 Micromoons also mean neap tides—lower-than-average tidal ranges.

🌟 Bonus Upcoming Stargazing:

🌠 Lyrid Meteor Shower: April 17–26 (peaks Apr 21–22 with dark skies – Moon only 40% full)
🌠 Eta Aquariids: Begins Apr 20, peaks in early May
🌌 ANZAC Day Alignment: Don’t miss the crescent Moon with Venus, Saturn & Mercury before dawn!

Perth Observatory has finally decided it’s time Perth Observatory has finally decided it’s time to stop looking at distant galaxies and start looking for love. With a profile boasting “great views, a rich history, and an intimate knowledge of celestial bodies,” the Observatory is confident it will be a star attraction on the dating app. While we can't confirm any matches, we're getting overwhelming number of likes from users who describe themselves as “moon lovers” and “big on space.”

We’re not picky, as long as you appreciate the wonders of the universe and don’t mind a little light pollution talk over dinner, we’re open to seeing where the cosmos takes us.

The Observatory’s ideal date includes a romantic stargazing session, a deep conversation about black holes, and a guided tour of the galaxy provided you don’t ghost before the nebula tour ends.

While many institutions struggle with commitment, Perth Observatory is happy to take things slow—like the cooling rate of a white dwarf. But for the right match? It’s ready to go supernova.

Swipe right for stargazing, cosmic chemistry, and maybe—just maybe—a love that’s out of this world.

Happy April Fool’s! 😆

Is anyone missing a very tame emu? Bruce, as we'v Is anyone missing a very tame emu?

Bruce, as we've named him, has been hanging around the Observatory the last couple of weeks, making appearances only during setup for major events, like our summer lecture two weeks ago, and for setup for the wedding that is being held here tonight.

He looks like he's had a lot of experience with humans and is looking to get into either the trades or the events setup industry. If there's any tradies looking for apprentices, or event managers looking for staff, this might be the bird for you.

He does like the Aussie classics. During our setup for the summer lecture, he liked it very much when INXS, The Models, Powderfinger, and Kylie Minogue were playing on the speakers.

Also, if you have a roo problem at your home, this might be the bird. Our mob of kangaroos don't like him and have got out of Dodge in record time.

NOTE: I've also called Kanyana Wildlife, COK rangers, and Wildcare as well

Today the Autumnal Equinox occurs at 5:01 pm (AWST Today the Autumnal Equinox occurs at 5:01 pm (AWST), marking the beginning of astronomical Spring for the Northern Hemisphere, and the start of Autumn for the Southern Hemisphere. This is an exact moment when the Sun’s declination equals 0 as seen from the Earth. The two points where the ecliptic or the imaginary path the Sun seem to trace out along the celestial sphere meets the celestial equator are known as the equinoctial points.

The Equinox (literally meaning ‘equal nights’ in Latin) means that night and day are nearly equal worldwide, and that the Sun rises due east of an observer on the equinox and sets due west. The term Equilux is sometimes used to discern the difference between the true Equinox and the point when sunlight length equals the length of the night. Several factors play a role in this, including the time it takes the physical diameter of the Sun to clear the horizon, atmospheric refraction, and the observer’s true position in their respective time zone. The Equilux occurs within a few days of either Equinox.

Congrats to the Square Kilometre Array Observatory Congrats to the Square Kilometre Array Observatory team (@skaobservatory) on this amazing milestone. The SKA-Low is the Australian side (@ska_australia) of a world-leading radio telescope being built in Western Australia and South Africa. It has captured its first image which is a crucial step towards seeing the origins of the known universe.

This first image was taken using 1,000 Christmas-tree-like antennas which is less than 1% of the total 131,000 antennas that are planned, and showed 85 of the brightest galaxies in the region. When completed in 2030, the same frame could show more than 600,000 galaxies.

The first image from SKA-Low (left) compared to a simulated image (right) of the same patch of sky the telescope may capture once complete. (Supplied: SKAO)
