Our @matthewlwwoods captured this image of the International Space Station flying over our Lowell Telescope Dome last night. If you missed it, don't worry, the @iss will again fly over extremely bright tonight at 7:50 pm (Mag -3.3).

Our @matthewlwwoods was at Sullivan Rock on Saturday and managed to capture Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS). There was some light pollution but it was just visible as a very faint fuzzy blob. Here's how you can catch it:

✨ When: from 8:15 pm
✨ Where: Look low on the western horizon
✨ Best Viewing Times: After sunset, away from city lights.

🔭 Tips for Viewing:

1️⃣ Use binoculars, camera (with a 155mm+ lens) or a small telescope for the best view.
2️⃣ Head to the coastline so you have great views to the west.
3️⃣ Check apps like SkySafari or Stellarium to track its position.

📸 Don’t forget to capture the moment! Tag us in your comet photos 🌌

In Australia, the Southern Cross is circumpolar and can be seen throughout the year. It's the smallest constellation in terms of size and you can only see five stars with the naked eye.

There's a lovely open star cluster of sparkling blue and red stars called the Jewel Box next to the Southern Cross. The cluster which contains 100 stars is about 10 million years old, and 8,800 light-years away. Just below the Jewel Box is a dark nebula called the Coalsack. The Coalsack is the head of the Emu in the night sky that the indigenous people saw in the night sky

Stories from the Noongar people depict the stars of Crux as five naughty youngsters who scattered when a spear was thrown at them. Another Noongar story has the stars of Crux and the pointers as seven sacred men/spirits who came to Earth and made the laws and started the 14 different language groups to re-establish the good marriage state.

Our @matthewlwwoods be on @skynewsaustralia at 7:35 a.m. (AWST)/10:35 a.m. (AEST) on Saturday to discuss that night's Planetary Alignment of all the planets except for Mercury.

It'll be visible for the next few weeks. The best time to see Planetary Alignment is after 8 p.m., and you've got to have a reasonably clear view of the western horizon, as Venus and Saturn are low.

Venus and Jupiter can be seen in binoculars, but Mars and Saturn are best seen through a telescope. Uranus and Neptune are very underwhelming in a telescope.

Congrats to @blueorigin on the launch of its first New Glenn rocket called 'So You're Telling Me There's a Chance'.

Mars reaches opposition on Thursday, 16 January, at 9:00 am AWST. This means the Red Planet will be directly opposite the Sun in the sky, making it shine brightly all night long.

Why is this exciting? At opposition, Mars is closest to Earth, making it appear larger and more detailed through telescopes. Its iconic rust-red hue will be unmistakable, and you might even spot surface features like its polar caps or the dark markings of its plains.

🔭 Grab your telescope for the best view.
🌌 Head to a dark-sky location to minimise light pollution if you can.
🕒 It's best to view Mars between 9:30 pm to 3:30 am.
