Making the Wonders of the Universe Accessible for Everyone
At Perth Observatory, we believe astronomy is for everyone — and we’re committed to making our site, telescopes, and experiences as accessible and inclusive as possible.
Whether you’re visiting for a tour, event, or private group program, we’ll do our best to accommodate your needs and ensure you have an enjoyable and memorable visit.
Mobility Assistance & Transport
🚐 Rocket Rita – Our 8-Seat Golf Cart
We know the Observatory grounds can be challenging for those with limited mobility. That’s why we have Rocket Rita — our trusty 8-seat golf cart — ready to provide transport around the site during tours and events for visitors who can’t walk long distances.
Accessible Telescopes & Viewing Options
🔭 Pantograph Telescope
For visitors who use wheelchairs or have difficulty with stairs and ladders, we have a specially designed pantograph telescope that brings the eyepiece down to a comfortable height, making it easier for everyone to enjoy the night sky.
🏛️ AV Access in the Domes
Some of our heritage-listed domes have narrow staircases that may be difficult or impossible for some visitors to access. To address this, we’re in the process of installing audio-visual equipment in these domes so visitors who can’t use the stairs can still take part in the telescope experiences through live video and commentary.
Tailored Tours & Group Programs
We regularly work with schools, aged care facilities, disability service providers, and other organisations to deliver customised programs for their groups.
💰 Pricing Adjustments
- We adjust pricing for groups with disabilities in recognition of the extra logistical needs and to make visits more accessible.
- We also provide discounted tours for schools in low socio-economic areas to ensure every student has the chance to be inspired by astronomy.
Our Commitment
We’ve proudly partnered with disability support groups in the past to deliver exceptional experiences for their members — and we’re always open to discussing how we can make your visit work best for you.
