#Perth #WA last Saturday we had the official opening of our Indigenous Astronomy Centre called Worl Wangkiny (Noongar for 'Sky Stories') that celebrates more than 60,000 years of indigenous astronomy in Australia. The centre was originally a half-completed telescope dome set under our spectacular southern skies. It is comprised of two major artworks that tell the stories of Old Man Emu (the emu in the sky) and the creation of the Milky Way and Perth Observatory has partnered with Koya Aboriginal Corp who will provide their unique perspective on the enthralling stories told within these walls.

Worl Wangkiny is an outstanding testament to the work of the artists, Noongar elders, @governorstirlingseniorhs students, #rotaryclubofkalamunda and Perth Observatory staff and volunteers who were involved in this @Lotterywest funded project.

Thank you to @bindi_bindi_dreaming for catering and @pwsmusic_ for playing at the opening. We'd also like to thank everyone who attended the opening and we hope you all were inspired by the centre. #Perth #WA last Friday we had the pleasure of having @curtinuniversity’s planetary scientist Dr Katarina Miljković as our speaker for our #SummerLecture. Dr Miljkovic is the only Australian involved with @nasa’s #MarsInSight Mission (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) that landed on #Mars at the end of 2018 at Elysium Planitia and has been revealing what lies under the #redplanet’s surface so that we can understand the evolution of Mars and other rocky planets in our inner solar system.

The night was terrific with the public coming early and having picnics or food from George's Kebabs and coffee from Matobo Coffee on our back lawn. Katarina gave a fantastic talk about how Mars by no means quiet like the Moon, how Insight also listens to meteors striking Mars, annoying problem of InSight's heat probe getting stuck and the Mars Cube One (MarCO) CubeSats that piggybacked with the InSight mission to test CubeSat navigation and endurance in deep space, and to help relay real-time communications during the lander's descent and landing.

#Perth #WA last Thursday we had a special public talk on Captain #JamesCook, his #Polynesian Navigator #Tupaia and their journey to view the transit of #Venus and sail the #EastCoast of #Australia on the Observatory's back lawn in partnership with @westaustralianopera.

This was an introductory event for West Australian Opera's #StarNavigator Opera (https://www.waopera.asn.au/show/star-navigator) that was created by #TimFinn OBE and will be held on the 28th of March at @perthconcerthall.

Our volunteer Arthur's talk was fantastic and very informative with everyone also having a great time listening to a composition from the opera and looking at the moon through our telescopes.

#Perth #WA we had an awesome time at #astrofest2020 on Saturday the 29th of Feb. It's great to catch up with everyone in the Astronomy WA community and to see the joy and fun the 4,000 people as they looked through the telescopes, did activities at the numerous stalls and listen to amazing talks.

Also, congrats to volunteer Martin Williams as he won the Astrophotography exhibition's Best New Talent and Best Astro Photo awards for his image of the Horsehead Nebula (NGC 2023).
